GWG2021 Interviews with Steve Ekker, founder of the Genome Writers Guild and Friday Session 2 speaker.
Question: This is the 5th annual GWG conference, and you’re one of the founders of the Guild, and it’s quite unique; what was your vision for the organization?
Question: You’re speaking at the session on genome editing for aquatic environments: lakes, rivers, groundwater, seas, that’s a lot of water. What aspect of your research on aquatic environments to you plan to highlight?
Question: Creativity and out of the box thinking, serendipity and chance: they all play a part in scientific discovery; have they shaped the field of genome engineering?
Question: The Guild will award the Rosalind Franklin Medal to an outstanding body of research by a woman in the field of genome engineering. You and Mary-Ann Liebert originated the award; tell us about it and why recognition like this is so essential.
Question: Scripting Life for a Healthy Planet is the conference theme; what do you see as some of the most innovative developments to achieve this goal?
GWG2021 Interviews with Shawn Otto, author of The War on Science and Wednesday evening keynote speaker.
Question: You predicted the rise of anti-science authoritarians and the threat they pose to democracy. I love this quote from your book: "Science is never partisan and inherently political”. What do you mean?
Question: Genome editing often makes headlines; I’m thinking of the report of the world’s first genome edited babies in November 2018: twin girls. Do you think that anti-science advocates will attack this area of science?
Question: It’s not just the far right’s romance with authoritarians; identity politics and postmodernism are also love interests of the left: I experienced plenty of this in art school. Could you talk about this topic?
Question: Biological science is clearly the hero of the COVID-19 pandemic; so much so that scientists like Anthony Fauci and Mike Osterholm are now household names. Why do you think we’re seeing this shift, and has the spotlight increased appreciation for the value of scientific research?
GWG2021 Interview with Kevin Davies, Executive Editor, The CRISPR Journal and GWG Panel Moderator:
Question: What would you like to see highlighted in the session Genome Editing for Meeting 21st Century Needs?
Question: You’ve written about the scope of genetic science in your book Editing Humanity and I’m wondering what does the future hold for genome engineering?
Question: The Nobel prize for CRISPR created a lot of excitement; and now people are more curious : what prospects could the future hold for CRISPR and other precision editing tools?
GWG2021 Interview with Arjun Khakhar, Senior Scientist at Flagship Labs 70 and GWG Session Chair:
Question: What do you plan to highlighted in the session Will rewriting microbial genomes rewrite the future?
Question: Looking at the big picture of genome engineering, with so much potential and so many possibilities, what do you imagine the future holds?
Question: I’m curious about engineering genomes for targeted alterations; what’s that all about?
GWG2021 Interview with Heather Lombardi, Director, Division of Animal Bioengineering and Cellular Therapies, FDA and speaker on Wednesday Session 2, Animal Editing
Question: Scripting Life for a Healthy Planet is the theme of this year’s GWG2021 conference. What’s the role of your group at the FDA that reflects this theme? Further, your group will host a break-out meeting during the conference; can you tell us a little bit about that event?
Question: What does safety mean when applied to genome modification or genome engineering for animals?
GWG2021 Interview with Shondra Pruett-Miller (Director, Center for Advanced Genome Engineering (CAGE), St. Jude Children's Research Hospital) Rosalind Franklin Award Committee Chair and GWG Speaker, Thursday Session 2
Question: We have a special event on the second day of our conference, introducing the recipient of the Rosalind Franklin Medal. Could you tell us more about this unique award and the criteria for selection?
Question: What aspect of your research at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital do you plan to highlight during the session Gene Therapies for Genetic Diseases
Question: Scripting Life for a Healthy Planet is the theme of GWG2021. How does your work highlight this theme?
Question: I’ve been reading about the possibilities for editing genomes and it’s fascinating; what could the future hold for genome engineering?
